  • Double cleansing: what it is and which natural ingredients to choose for flawless skincare

Double cleansing is a concept that, although rooted in Asian beauty tradition, is gaining popularity in the Western skincare world thanks to its evident benefits for the health and appearance of the skin.

This practice involves using two different types of cleansers, one after the other, to ensure a deeper yet gentle cleansing of the face.

What is double cleansing

As the term suggests, double cleansing, or double cleansing, involves cleaning and deeply cleansing the facial skin using a two-step process.

It starts with an oily cleanser that works by affinity and is able to remove all liposoluble substances, such as makeup, sebum, and dirt, by dissolving them. Then, a foaming product containing surfactants that acts by contrast is used to remove the oily phase and consequently the impurities trapped in it.

Benefits of double cleansing

Compared to traditional cleansing, double cleansing certainly offers many advantages, starting with a deeper cleansing of the skin, from which even the most resistant substances, such as waterproof makeup, are effectively removed.

This practice prepares the epidermis to better absorb subsequent treatments after cleansing, such as serums and moisturizers, maximizing their effect. Finally, it protects the skin's hydrolipidic balance, without compromising the skin barrier and its defense against external agents.

Cosmetic Ingredients for Effective Double Cleansing

To develop cleansers suitable for double cleansing, it is essential to select ingredients that not only clean effectively but also respect and nourish the skin.

Often, the best solutions come from nature, which provides us with high-performing products with low environmental impact. Let's delve into some of them.

First Phase: Oil-Based Cleansers

There are now many affinity cleansers available that can be used alone or in double cleansing. They come in the form of oils, butters, ointments, balms, as well as creams and milk cleansers. To choose the most suitable one for us, a good strategy could certainly be to evaluate them based on the type of skin we have:

  • Dry skin will benefit from rich oils such as coconut, moringa, and argan.

  • Mature skin will benefit from more moisturizing oils such as rosehip, pomegranate, and green tea.

  • Mixed and oily skins will prefer lighter oils such as avocado and jojoba.

  • Sensitive skins will benefit from soothing oils such as chamomile, calendula, and oats, or mineral oils such as petroleum jelly oil.

Does Oil Cleansing Make the Skin Greasy?

Absolutely not, do not give up on oil cleansing if you have oily skin. On the contrary, remember that an oil cleanser binds to sebum by affinity. Instead, using overly stripping foaming cleansers could be detrimental and lead the skin to produce even more sebum.

Second Phase: Foaming Cleansers

Just like affinity cleansers, contrast cleansers should be chosen based on the skin's needs, favoring formulas that contain useful ingredients:

  • Dry skin prefers gentle ingredients such as oats, rice, and panthenol.

  • Mature skin needs antioxidants like vitamins C and E and could also benefit from small amounts of exfoliants.

  • Mixed and oily skins could benefit from inclusions of salicylic acid and absorbent substances like clays and activated charcoal.

  • Sensitive skins prefer soothing ingredients such as bisabolol, calendula, mallow, and aloe.

In terms of texture, foaming cleansers can come in various forms: gel, mousse, liquid, or even in the form of the famous syndets (solid non-soap cleansers).

What is important to specify, as mentioned earlier, is that the surfactant used should not have excessive degreasing power, like most sulfates or sulfonates. Instead, a gentle and highly moisturizing foaming agent should be preferred, such as lipo-amino acids.

Common Mistakes in Double Cleansing

In addition to selecting the right products, it is also crucial to perform double cleansing correctly. Often, people make mistakes that can compromise the effectiveness of the treatment. Here are some:

  1. Rinsing the face after oil cleansing: Many people tend to rinse their faces between the two applications of products. However, doing so means washing the face twice, which can be more aggressive for the skin. Instead, by applying the two products directly in sequence without adding water, the cleansing will occur in a single phase without being too lipid-stripping.

  2. Neglecting certain areas of the face such as the contours and folds: By doing so, we may not remove all the impurities from our skin.

  3. Rushing the process: To ensure proper and deep cleansing, it is advisable to massage each product onto dry hands for at least 20-30 seconds. Only in this way will effective cleansing be achieved. The massage should be long and gentle, to collect all the dirt without rubbing or irritating the skin. A gentle cloth or sponge can be used to aid in the removal of products, as long as they are delicate.

Double Cleansing: What's the Right Frequency?

Just as the choice of double cleansing as a skincare routine is entirely personal, so is the frequency. In some cases, once a day may suffice, perhaps in the evening if makeup needs to be removed. In other cases, it may be useful to double cleanse twice a day, especially if the skin is particularly oily. To determine the best frequency for us, it is essential to assess the skin's reactions because if it is overly cleansed, it may show signs of dryness or irritation.

Double cleansing is not just a beauty practice; it is a ritual that, if performed correctly and with the right ingredients, can transform the health and appearance of the skin. By carefully selecting emollient oils, gentle surfactants, and moisturizing and soothing components, you can formulate products that not only cleanse but also nourish, offering consumers a skincare routine that is as effective as it is skin and environmentally friendly.
